Martha Stewart Sparkman


In 1859, Martha Stewart married William James Sparkman Jr., who was born on November 16, 1820 in Coyles Branch on Line Fork, Perry County (now Letcher County), and died on November 22, 1918. Martha was born in 1840 and died before 1910. In 1910, William was living with his son, Moses. They are buried in the Dawson in Rowan County, Kentucky.

He enlisted in the Confederate Army on October 18, 1862, and discharged the same day. In 1900, they were living in the Hogtown area of Rowan county.


William James Sparkman Jr. and Martha Stewart had the following children:


James Sparkman, born 1866. On December 24, 1886, he married Susanna Stamper at the home of her father, William Stamper. They were married by James Sparkman's uncle, County Judge James Stewart.


Mary H. "Mollie" Sparkman, born 1868. She married Braxton J. Caudill on December 24, 1885. Braxton, born on October 11, 1865, was the son of James Aaron Caudill and Eliza Eldrige. He died on July 9, 1935.


John Crittendon "Crit" Sparkman, born 1870 and died in 1959. He is buried in the Dawson Cemetery.


Moses Sparkman, born 1873. On February 3, 1898, Moses, age 24, married Bertha Richardson, age 17, at the home of William Patton. They were married by by J. W. Fairchild. Witnesses were R. W. Christian (sur) and Sam Mannan. Moses and Bertha lived in Elliotsville.


Wesley Sparkman was born in 1875. He died before 1900.


Hiram Logan Sparkman was born July 1879 and died in and died in 1954. He married Rachel Fletcher (1883-1957) on March 8, 1906. They are buried in the Dawson Cemetery.
